Overview

Legal Metrology refers to the legal framework put in place to regulate measurements and measuring instruments used in commercial transactions. In India, the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, governs this domain and ensures accuracy, transparency and consumer protection in trade. The Legal Metrology Act, 2009, which came into force on 1st April 2011, provides the legal framework for regulating weights, measures and pre-packaged commodities in India. Any individual or business engaged in manufacturing, importing, packing, or selling such goods must obtain Legal Metrology Registration to ensure compliance with prescribed measurement and labeling standards.

This registration is mandatory for manufacturers, importers, and packers to ensure their goods meet prescribed measurement standards and labeling norms. The Department of Consumer Affairs, under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, is the regulating authority for this law.
